There were over one hundred answers to the survey. Not all could be published on the site, and so we have narrowed it down to a third of the participants. These are the answers with more text mass than one-liners. It's interesting to see the different perspectives presented by all the answers. The questions were written on paper slips and drawn from a hat by the editors. |
Where/how did you first learn about The L Word?
Krizten, USA: My friend saw the commercials for it, & since she doesn't have showtime, insisted that she was coming to my house every Sunday & watching it.

Jay 2, USA: Through the tv guide, there was an article so I said "what da hell?" I've been hooked eva since.
Dana 4-ever, Norway: I found a text about the show online and begged my friend for copies to watch.
Adamant_Eve, USA: I think it was a VH1 special about gays in television, and I hounded for any info since.
Serendipidy, Canada: A friend mentioned it.
J, Brazil: It's been so long I can't even remember. I guess I just read about it online, probably on AfterEllen.com.
Carrie, USA: My roommate.
N/A, Spain: Read about it somewhere...in an article about how "gay" american tv shows are becoming...not sure.
MistressKitty, USA: I heard about it the summer before Second season from a friend who had rented season 1 and loved it.
Kincora, USA: Showtime Ad, then followed in Curve.
Kat, UK: From my ex girlfriend, who is American.
Mailis, France: On a lesbian forum.
Brea, USA: I saw an advertisement for The L Word on the Showtime Network and thought I would check it out. I hadn't seen the first season, but I like what I've seen in the second season.
Alice is my Homegirl, Sweden: I first read about the show at AfterEllen.com and began to go through every news piece available. When TLW got on the air I downloaded each and every episode -I was hooked!
Silver_roxy, USA: A friend.
N/A 2, USA: I actually stumbled across it by accident. I watched the first episode from the second season and was instantly hooked. I went out and bought the first season on DVD and now I watch the new episodes every sunday and have recruited 7 others who are also obsessed with this show.
Horace, USA: Commercial on Showtime.
Chloe S, Malaysia: A friend told me and showed me downloaded episodes.
Kaela, Canada: On ch.
Joann, USA: Cable TV advertisement.
N/A 3, USA: Saw the show once on Showtime and loved it every since.

Chelsea, USA: Well, I found out because I heard about it coming out on shotime from my cable company... and I wound up subscribing to the sho channels just so I could watch it.
buggs666, USA: Watching Showtime.
N/A 4, Belgium: By a gay friend who told me to watch Queer as Folk. After Queer as Folk was a promo for The L Word and I started DL.
Digitalgoddess, USA: Read about it from the i kiss girls website. There was a lot of talk about how great it was so I had to go out and rent it.
N/A 5, Wales/UK: I first learnt about The L Word when it was advertised on a television channel here.
What's the appeal of The L Word (to you)?
Krizten: Well, there's the eye-candy factor, of course, but I also enjoy the storylines, & trying to figure out what makes each character tick.
Shane_be_mine: I love all the cast, as well as the plot lines.
Athena: Shane, haha. Really though the humor and drama and sometimes forgetting it is about lesbians because they are goin through the same crap as everybody else.
So_funny: The awesome actresses and interesting plots.
Frida: It feels good to have a show about dykes and bi women, I'm bi myself and can relate to it.
Laura: The stories and the interactions between the characters.
Rich: Televised representation of homosexuals, hot lesbians with a fashion sense, and the writing is really fucking good.
Grimm: The characters, they're all good n' cosy together and when they're happy, I'm happy. The show makes me feel good.
Jay: There be lesbians. And sometimes they throw me a bone. Actually, there are far too many 'bones'. Sometimes they throw me a stick, I bolt around to fetch it, and by the time I bring it back all my favourite characters are GONE. I have no idea.
Breezer: It's so real. It doesn't try to cover up the dirty stuff, and yet it's so pure at the same time. It's all about love, in whatever form it takes.
Melanie: It is a show that has a character that I can relate to because I am going through the same things in my life.
Jay 2: Itz one of those shows that just.....takes u there, the storyline is so rich n the drama almost feels fral, it kinda gives u a window into wot these people are thinking, like Bette, dat's ma favo character.
Dana 4-ever: It's a show I can relate to.
Adamant_Eve: Lesbians of course. Something I could identify with.
Serendipidy: Finally seeing lesbian characted on television. Exploring issues on television never done before. Obviously the chance to watch these gorgeous women on screen for a whole hour.
J: Well, it represents me better than any other show I've seen around. Plus, it's hilarious sometimes! =D
Carrie: It's fun, it's dramatic, it's ridiculous, and I love Dana and Alice.
N/A: I feel I understand and loads of things make sense. I have never been part of a lesbian community. I know it's fiction, but it works in making you feel less alone.
MistressKitty: The fact that there is an entire show about lesbians just amazes me. The actresses are so delightful, and its nice to be a fan of something where when I support a same-sex relationship it is ACTUALLY CANON. (Example, NOT like X-Men where I Like Phoenix and Rogue, but they would never actually be paired).
Kincora: First was seeing Jennifer Beals again, now it's the dynamics of the group, and I love a good cry now and then.
Kat: As a red blooded lesbian, I'm always ready to make a drama out of.. well, a much smaller drama. I love the complex relationships between the characters, and identify intensely with their overemotional complications. I find The L Word the perfect way to express and indulge in our community's introspective narcissism. And it's funny as all hell with hot women.
Mailis: The Characters.
Brea: I like it because it like speaks to me. I know that may sound very weird, but it has helped me come out like Ellen Degeneres has helped many Lesbians and Bis come out.
Alice is my Homegirl: That it's not about women kissing up to men in order to gain a confirmation of their human value in return. IOW, they're not male-identified women, thank God. The women stand fast on their own two feet, but work well together without making each other look bad. I like the thought of a group of friends as a haven of security; the thought of an extended family of friends.
Silver_roxy: Lesbian, well-written, great story/character building.
N/A 2: The stories are very interesting, and every episode leaves you wanting more. The characters are well developed and the drama is intense. It's just an all around good show with good writing, good acting, and excellent plot lines.
Horace: Good personal relationship drama. Characters I like and care about. Hot sex.
Chloe S: That lesbian life has the same up-and-downs as heterosexual life. Smart script writing in Season 1 where an episode would open with a sequence and would later related it in the episode. The cast is good looking too.
Kaela: I love the characters.
Joann: Watching beautiful women get together.
N/A 3: The plots and relationship.
Joey: Lesbian movies are full of bad acting and production conditions (sad, but true) and The L Word, in comparison to that, feels like luxury. Besides being such a manificient product, the cast has this delightful chemistry which makes every ensemble scene enjoyable. Huge fan of the gang hanging out together, IOW.
Maria: The drama! The intrigues! And it's a non-exaggerated show about lesbians! Hurray!
Chelsea: It's sexy and also has a variety of character PERSONALITIES to relate to... not really a lifestyle to relate with.
buggs666: It's a good show.
N/A 4: It's a super show, I really love it.
Digitalgoddess: It makes me feel proud to be who I am. It reminds me I'm not alone too. It's sexy, hilarious and entertaining....need I say any more?
N/A 5: The main appeal for me is that it was interesting to watch how the lesbian community would be portrayed to the world, and also because I was having questions about my sexuality and thought that it would be a worthwhile show to watch.
How do you prefer to watch the show? By yourself or with friends?
Krizten: With friends, though I usually always end up watching with one friend, my brother, & my parents, & that can be quite an interesting situation.
Shane_be_mine: By myself so I can fantasise freely.
Athena: With my sister or by myself.
So_funny: Both, mostly we watch separately then talk about it later.
Frida: On my own. There's nobody to watch with where I live, but I haven't really asked around either. Most of my friends are straight.
Laura: I like to watch the episode at least once by myself, but after that I'm always the first to organize L-Word marathon with my friends.
Melanie: By myself.
Rich: W/ friends.
Jay: Because I'm in Canada... DVDs. Because all the gay friends moved away... on the phone. Hopefully synchronized. Hard to press play at the exact same time you know.
Breezer: By myself.
Grimm: With my friends, we're four brave souls hanging out, watching the thing.
Jay 2: W friends if they come ova, if not then, shit, I watch it by myself, sometimes w the ben n jerrys sometimes w a tissue n sometimes w a plastic dart gun to shoot @ Tonya. (she's a golddigger ya kno !)
Dana 4-ever: It depends on how my week goes. I've already seen all episodes so I can afford to miss them once in a while.
Adamant_Eve: By myself.
Serendipidy: No friends who live close-by watch the show, so alone.
J: I prefer to watch by myself, because my computer screen is very small. =D But I wouldn't mind watching with friends at all if I could see it on a big TV. And I will be able to in July. Heh.
Carrie: With my roommate.
N/A: I watch it on my own. But I can hardly stop myself from talking about it!
MistressKitty: I usually watch with the president of my school's GSA- I am the secretary- We make it a weekly event. Then when I rewatch, it is usually by myself or showing a clip to another friend.
Kincora: By myself.
Kat: Usually by myself, unless I happen to have lesbian company. And no I'm not revealing how often that occurs!
Mailis: With my friends.
Brea: By myself. I don't think any of my friends watch it.
Alice is my Homegirl: Anywhere, anyhow. I enjoy watching it with friends, but more often I sit alone by the computer and watch the latest downloaded episode, 'cause I can't help myself! Gotta have my TLW fix! J
Silver_roxy: Both.
N/A 2: I watch with friends. Every sunday at about 9:45 I can expect to see people pulling up to the apt to watch the new episode.
Horace: By myself.
Chloe S: Either way is fine.
Kaela: Doesn't matter to me, it's all good either way.
Joann: With my girlfriend, and friends.
N/A 3: Alone.
Joey: By myself to begin with but I usually also have a viewing session with my friends after that. It's quite fun hearing a small army of people holler at the TV set and throw popcorn… *BG*
Maria: It depends. When L Word comes on the tele, I watch alone or with my gf. When I need to see what happens next, I turn to my friends who's got the show on VCD and we have a girls' night.
Chelsea: I like watching it by myself, definately. But I also like "sharing" the show with my friends(or girlfriend at the moment!).
buggs666: Either way is ok with me.
N/A 4: I rather watch it by myself, then I can rewind as much as I want.
Digitalgoddess: I always watch it with two of my best friends because then we talk about the episodes later.
N/A 5: I prefer to watch the show by myself, mainly because that type of show doesn't really appeal to my friends.
Who's your favorite/least favorite character/s and why?
Krizten: Favorites, definately Dana, Shane, & Alice, Dana because she's basically me, inexperienced (sp?), shy at first, has no idea what to do when she realizes she likes someone (well, before Alice at least), Shane cause she's an awesome friend, & she gets all the girls without even trying, & it's really good to see that they're starting to dive deeper into her this season, & Alice because she's really funny, oh, & also Carmen, she's great. Least favorite, Tina, Helena, & Jenny, Tina because she lets people control her life, she can't make any decisions for herself, Helena cause she's just a bitch, & she's more controlling than Bette ever was, just in a more subtle way, & Jenny, not for the same reasons as everyone else (that she's annoying, & her writing is awful & she's too morbid, though I do think most of her writing isn't that great), but because I can't quite figure her out, she confuses the shit out of me, & also, her clothes, she has the wardrobe from hell, no the wardrobe that hell spit out cause it thought it was hideous.
Shane_be_mine: Favorite: Shane/Jenny/Bette/Dan/Alice (sorry its very difficult to choose.) Least favorite: Helena (no fault of hers, just want Tina and Bette back together).
Athena: Shane is my favorite character because she is so hot and her confidence. Also she dresses really cool. Jenny is my least favorite because she is a sucky writer and she complains too much.
So_funny: Faves= Alice because she's funny, bi, and quirky; Shane=she's loyal to her friends, S2 haircut... Least= Tonya because she killed mr.P and she's a golddigger; Helena because she's clearly evil; Season 1 Jenny because she just wouldn't shut up.
Frida: I love Bette! She's tough, with a heart of gold. And I love Tina… because she loves Bette. They're so good together! I'm devastated over their breakup! Everybody are good… I hate Jenny though, she's a pain in the ass.
Laura: I don't have a favourite character I personally found each of them appealling for some reason, and I particulary like the fact that none of them is represented as perfect or flawless. Even the "so called" villans are helpful to the develop of the story.
Melanie: Dana is my favorite character because she is so much like me. My least favorite character is Jenny because she is to boring.
Rich: I really like Jenny, although most seem to hate her. I like the honesty of her charachter, that some people do these horrible things to other people without really meaning to, as she does in S1. Obviously I hated Tonya, but I guess I'm supposed to.
Jay: Best = Shane. Least whiny. Most coolest. Uber sexy. Least = Kit. She needs more of that group dynamic stuff going on... doesn't seem close to any of the characters 'cept Bette in that pal-around have fun shoot the shit... way.
Breezer: My favorite is Bette because she realizes how badly she screwed up and she's doing whatever it takes to make things right with Tina, even if that means they'll never be together again. My least favorite is Mark because he's just a dickhead.
Grimm: W.o. a doubt, Tina. She's an underestimated character and I don't think many fans get her. I'm pleased to see we learn more about her, what gets her going, etcetera, this time around. She's a strong girl! The reason to why some people doesn't like her may be that she has a way of dealing with certain things which doesn't necessarily agree with how her critics would handle the situation. I can't really say I hate any of the characters, except Jenny. Jenny seems to get a kick out of playing the victim all the time, it's VERY annoying.
Jay 2: All of them r my favorites, but I happen to like Bette the most, she's even in the carrer dat I want!! Can u say role model?? But I think that I actually fell in luv w the drama da is Jenny, she's cool, needs to grow sum backbone though......
Dana 4-ever: Dana, of course! I like her shyness and geeky qualities. It's cute. But I probably like her the best because we're very much alike. Besides Dana, I also like Alice and Shane. They're the three funniest people on the show! I can't stand Jenny because she's always blaming others for her mistakes. She's better this season, but still far from ok in my eyes.
Adamant_Eve: Dana and Bette are my favorite, w/ Alice right behind. Shane is eh, alright, and Jenny used to annoy the crap outta me, but shes getting better.
Serendipidy: Favourite: This is tough. I have to say Shane. She's hot. She's like so many of us in her way of thinking. I relate to her the most. And I'm convinced Kate Moennig is one of this planets most gorgeous creatures.
Least favourite: Veronica Bloom. The part was played well, but honestly, what was the point of having her character in the show? Shane did not undergo any major changes because of her, Carmen would have induced them anyways. I know common answers to this will be Helena. Well she is a bitch but she plays it so well. And she often gets put in her place by either Tina, Bette or Winnie. Oh yah..I forgot about Tonya. I do hate her, and I think she needs a slap sometimes, but she really is someone most people love to hate. She adds so much comic relief to some situations and I suppose on that level im glad she's on the show.
J: I like all of them, actually. Alice and Dana make me laugh so hard, and Bette and Tina are just SO cute together. All of them, as a group, are very nice. Group scenes are the best. My least favorite character, if I had to choose one, would be Mark in season 2. Oh, forget it, GOMEY! Yes, he's the worst. But he's not really a character, thank god. So Mark, and sometimes Jenny, when she's writing.
Carrie: I love Dana 'cause she's adorable and hilarious and I love Alice because she's really odd and quirky and adorable, as well. I hate Jenny 'cause I just think she's boring. And weird. In a bad way.
N/A: My favourite is Shane. Why? Half because I want to be like her and half because I am in love with her... My least favourite character is Tonya. She's the kind of woman I hate.
MistressKitty: Favorite: Alice. She is so blatantly honest, and sweet. She seems very earnest and a worthwhile person. Bette. I went from hating her last season to loving her this season. She has come full circle in attitude and expressing herself, and I really like that people can change. Jenny. Sometimes I identify with her a little too much, sometimes not at all- but I have to give some thumbs up to any character this fucked up.
Kincora: Favorite = Dana, which even surprises me. Least favorite this season is Gomey, I wish there were a cross over to Six Feet Under where he could be leaving the house and get run over by Claire's hearse on her way to experiment more with the other team.
Kat: This changes often, as I find different characters to identify with. I share the popular opinion that Jenny needs to eviscerate herself into evanescence, but she also has her moments when I feel intensely sorry for her. And dammit, I miss Toxic Tonya - she was hilarious.
Mailis: I think it's Alice because she makes me laugh a lot. Least favorite character: Jenny... she cries way too much during the first season... it's annoying.
Brea: I don't think I have a least favorite character, and they are all my favorite characters in one way or another. So not much help with that opinion.
Alice is my Homegirl: Alice. I LOVE Alice. They obviously had trouble with her storyline throughout season 1, she was gravely under-used. Leisha Hailey has the perfect comic timing, still she plays a hell of a good drama. Alice is the groups' famous 'funny lady', but she's got this depth of emotion that's beautiful whenever it reveals itself. Hm… and Dana! -I love geeks! They're so cute! And Shane - who doesn't love Shane? She's sex personified. I hate Jenny because of the 'Oh, look at pooooor innocent little me, I'm such a victim! Wanna fuck? Poor me, bad Tim/Carmen/whomever…' crap. Bleck. Uff. Eeeeeeeew. One person I changed my mind about was Tonya, she was hilarious in S2 and I miss her immensely!
Silver_roxy: Favorite: Shane, Alice, Marina, Jenny, Jenny's Best Friend, Veronica Bloom. Least Favorite: Bette was really annoying in season 2. Ivan when he/she turned mean, Gomey.
N/A 2: Well I hated Tonya (But who didn't) Tina pisses me off and I hate Helena as well. I like all of the other characters in their own little way.
Horace: Favorite- Alice She's the most real. Least Favorite- Jenny. Too irritating and dramatic.
Chloe S: Least - Mark. Annoying intrusive typical lustful man. So much for "art".
Kaela: Alice is my favorite because she's wicked funny. Marina's girlfriend, I forget her name, she's so annoying.
Joann: Favorite: There's a tie between Bette and Alice. Bette because she's beautiful and smart and beautiful. Alice because she's as cute as can be, smart, funny (which is really important), and I love the way she kisses onscreen. Least Favorite: Jenny. She's too damn whiny. Thank god I have no friends like her. I'd drop my best friend in a second if she started acting like Jenny. She's the most irritating character I can ever remember seeing.
N/A 3: Favorite Character is Dana because she is so hot! Also in the beginning, I loved that she was struggling to come out. Least Favorite is Helena. She is too controlling and neurotic.
Joey: Every character has something I like, I can even appreciate Jenny at times like when she's nuts at the Olivia cruise and says like it is to Hunter or Mark regarding lesbians and women altogether. I do not care for her writing too much though, or the way she keeps victimizing herself. I have a problem with Helena because she feels… I dunno. Fake, phony, over the top? She's this aristocratic, spoiled brat and it was pure pleasure to see her being shot down by Tina and Peggy in the s2 finale. Ah… And so we have Gomey, whom I hate with a vengeance. He's a poor excuse for a human being.
Maria: Shane has sex appeal and Alice has humor, and I love them both. My least favorites are Jenny for all the obvious reasons, Mark, Gomey, Helena and Dana. I used to really like Dana but she's been a jerk lately, I hope they fix that for season 3.
Chelsea: I love Leisha Hailey as Alice and also Rachael Shelley as Helena... Heh, odd character choices, huh? Not to mention, I was totally in love with Mia Kirshner BEFORE The L Word, so I actually like Jenny, as well. However, I do not like Katherine Moennig as Shane...
buggs666: Fave- Bette, cuz she doesn't take crap from anyone. Least- Jenny, she's just too weird for words.
N/A 4: Shane is my favourite, she has something I can't describe... something cool but still nice. And I hate Jenny. Ow my god, just kill her...
Digitalgoddess: My favorite character is shane. Of course everyone's going to say that but the truth is I was the one who liked her first! Ha ha j/k. She's just so sexy and honest. She helps everyone around her and really cares about her friends. My least favorite was definately Tonya. She reminded me of people in my past who were too controlling. She was just deep down inside ugly.
N/A 5: My favourite character is Jenny mainly because I saw myself in her. She obviously had doubts and her innocence and purity makes the show... how this innocent and naive young writer explores a part of her she didnt know existed makes the show more captivating and she is a representation of every woman, girl who is doubting their sexuality.
Which character would you be on the show if you could choose?
Krizten: Well, I already pretty much am Dana, so it would be nice to be Shane, even with her past issues, or possibly Carmen, we need more exposition on her before I decide.
Shane_be_mine: Jenny, without the irritating Carnival sequences cos I am still exploring my sexuality. Plus she gets to make out with Marina and Carmen, need I say more?
Athena: This is hard but I want to say Shane but I am gonna go with Alice. She is funny and all that good stuff.
So_funny: Alice.
Frida: Tina. So I could have sex with Bette! ;P
Laura: Probably Alice, 'cause she's the kind of friend who is always there for you, who helps anyone except herself, and because she's so damn funny!
Melanie: Dana.
Rich: Probably Jenny or Tina. I guess that's a pretty wide range.
Jay: Helena 'cause I'm broke and would like all her money.
Breezer: Alice, because she gets to screw Dana.
Grimm: I'd love being Marina for a day, just to find out how it feels to walk around and hold such power over others. She's such a hottie, it would be interesting to see her influence on other people. If not Marina, I'd love to be Bette so I could cuddle up with Tina and play house all day long… TiBette forever!
Jay 2: I would actually want to play myself, ya kno? Because then there would be less problems, but mre drama, cuz I will tel people to their face what's really happenin (be out Helena! Tina don't want u! )
Dana 4-ever: I'd like to be Charlotte Birch so I can tell Jenny to fuck off! Hahahahaha!!!
Adamant_Eve: Hard one. But I think Alice because she has had sex with Bette and Dana. lol
Serendipidy: Carmen. That girl is sweet and gorgeous and has killer tattoos, and she gets busy with Shane AND Jenny (who I have to admit I'm liking more and more in season 2) ...need I say more?
J: Hmm... that would have to be Alice. I think she has the most interesting life. Also, I would love to be Bette, because she's so secure and confident.
Carrie: I'd be Alice... 'Cause she gets cute clothes?
N/A: Shane...or Jenny (though I write better).
MistressKitty: I would actually play Jenny. Sure, Alice would be fun, but it would be so much MORE fun to work with Leisha Hailey than to BE her. Haha.
Kincora: Jenny, just cause I'd be to lazy to work out as much as Dana.
Kat: I feel like I actually have been most of them, at some point in my life. I identify with most situations that present themselves on the show. So from a purely shallow point of view, I would opt to be Dana, for the pleasure of topping Leisha Hailey.
Mailis: Well... being Alice seems fun!
Brea: Me. Ummm Either Alice or Jenny.
Alice is my Homegirl: Shane. Who does NOT want to be Shane? 1: She's bloody gorgeous, with a healthy attitude towards life and different sexualities. 2: She dresses like a god and won't pass judgment without listening to people first. And I would seduce Alice. Yeah. My second choice would be Alice, she's both funny and smart.
Silver_roxy: Hmm...probably Kit...a bisexual version, though.
N/A 2: Well if I could choose I would probably want to be Bette, but I know that I am most like Dana.
Horace: Shane, because she's the coolest.
Chloe S: Alice.
Kaela: Shane, because she's so free.
Joann: Tina, so I could sleep with Bette.
N/A 3: Jenny! For a while she was fucking Carmen.
Joey: Alice, without a doubt. Even though I don't like the clingy side of her, she as a person seems so genuine. And she's got an awesome sense of humor. Only catch… I don't do men. I'm 100% lesbian so Alice'd have to give up dick which is bad because then there wouldn't be any bisexual characters left in the show. Maybe I'd have to be Carmen instead.
Maria: A gorgeous extra in season 1, so I could be cruised and seduced by Shane almighty! :D
Chelsea: I would be Alice, definately. Being a journalist myself, I most relate to her. I don't really consider myself bisexual, but I have found myself dating men every once in a while, even though I much prefer women. I believe that is Alice's position as well.
buggs666: Bette.
N/A 4: Shane of course, she is the coolest one in the whole show. (Or maybe for one day Cherie, to be with Shane) ~I know, I'm Shane addicted~
Digitalgoddess: Shane - she gets so much action with so little effort.
N/A 5: Probably Jenny again because I would love to be pursued by Marina. She's intelligent and beautiful.
What's your favorite episode (s1 and s2)? (Yep, you may choose more than just one.)
Krizten: The last one that came on, what the hell was the name of that one? Um, Loyal, that's it, I think that's been the funniest one so far, & I loved how they all ditched Helena to have Family Night with Bette.
Shane_be_mine: Season 1- Pilot and Episode 13, Season2 - Episode 7.
Athena: S1 would have to be the last episode because you can really see Katherine acting. S2 would have to be the third episode...i forgot which episode it was where Carmen and Shane are playing the Too Hot game and Carmen starts to ask personal questions. And you see Shane hurting.
So_funny: S1ep3= the mission scene was just classic.
Frida: I like most of them, except those with Fransesca. She's scary.
Laura: Listen Up, Limb from Limb and Lawfully in the first season, and as far as it goes in the second season every episode with Dana/Alice or Shane/Carmen scenes.
Melanie: My favorite episode from s1 is Losing It. My favorite episode from s2 is Lap Dance.
Rich: I loved the episode in s1 when Bette debated the hypocritical right wing nut, although I wish the debate lasted longer and I wish Bette didn't start crying so early.
Jay: s1 = finale. Insanely dramatic and fast paced. s2 = Well I'd know the answer to that if THEY'D AIR THE GODDAMN THING IN CANADA.
Breezer: Looking Back because it shows the girls' past, and Limb From Limb because I freaking cried.
Grimm: The one where everyone toasts for Dana and Tonya, that episode had everything; sex, love, bitterness and a bitch on wheels!
Jay 2: Now how u expect me to answer dat?
Dana 4-ever: Labyrinth, 'cause I almost wet myself when Dana's mom had a lap dance! But it was also an important ep for us Danish fans!
Adamant_Eve: Episode 2 I think it is, where they go on the mission to "ascertain the disposition of one Miss Lara Perkins", And the most recent one, ep10 of S2, I really liked as well.
Serendipidy: In season one I love episode 112 - Looking Back. The one where they go on the Dina Shore weekend and Dana gets the HRC award...
J: I liked a lot of them, but I think I end up liking the season finales most, because lots of things happen in them. Also, the one when they travel, in the first season, is a favorite.
Carrie: I like Looking Back, with everyone's coming out stories and whichever one when Dana and Jenny try to sleep together, that part was funny.
N/A: The one where they go to the tournament party, with the coming out stories...that's one of my favourites.
MistressKitty: I don't really have favorite episode(s) but I do have moments.
Kincora: Season 2 so far would be 2.09 - just to see Bette and Tina together. Season 1.11 Looking Back.
Kat: Tough one. Probably one of the more recent ones, like Loyal or Late, Later, Latent.
Mailis: S1: Let's do it. S2: I don't have a favorite episode... or maybe the one when Dana dumps Tonya and vice versa!!!
Brea: I've only seen season two and I liked it when Bette stood up to her father, and when Jenny let Mark stay. I don't remember the episode numbers.
Alice is my Homegirl: Let's Do It and Looking Back, from S1. S2 is better, more smooth-sailing between comedy and drama peeks, which makes it harder to choose. I favor episode 2, 3, 5 and parts of episode 10-13. The Loveboat roleplaying thingy is an instant classic!!!
Silver_roxy: Oh man...don't make me choose. S1: Listen Up, Looking Back, Locked Up. S2: Lynch Pin, Late, Later, Latent, Land Ahoy, Lacuna.
N/A 2: From season 1 I think I would have to say its the episode when they go to jail. In season 2 it is When Dana and Alice first hook up.
Horace: -
Chloe S: Season 1, finale. Season 2, episode 6.
Kaela: The one where the girls have flashbacks of their first times.
Joann: Season 1 - when Bette and Candace hooked up. Season 2 - when Alice and Dana hooked up while putting the party bags together.
N/A 3: S1- The episode where tina was getting chased by her sperm donor's crazy girlfriend. Then Dana and Lara had sex on her floor. It was absolutely amazing. S2- The episode when Tina and Bette had sex was great.
Joey: The s2 finale, before I actually saw it. But when it aired I was so disappointed, no stories were thought entirely through and only the Jenny/Shane plot played out beautifully. The episode held such potential but it was wasted. So I'll go with Let's Do It, Looking Back from s1 and Labyrinth, Late, Later, Latent, Land Ahoy and Loud and Proud.
Maria: Looking Back and Land Ahoy.
Chelsea: Oh boy... I love the episode where Tina and Helena have beautiful, awesome sex in the hotel pool... That's great. Also, the pilot episode was wonderful (Marina and Jenny!)... But my most favorite, by far, is the party yacht episode where Dana breaks up with Lara and gets totally wasted later... and the sideplot about Bette and Tina becoming "boring" is great, as well... Yes, the episode was highly unrealistic, but I still loved it.
buggs666: The pilot in s1, episode 9 in s2.
N/A 4: I like them all, especially with Shane again. I liked the last episode of season 1 a lot (haven't seen season 2 yet, only the first 3 episodes of season 2) and I also like the one where they came in jail. The one with that stalker was fine too.
Digitalgoddess: One of my favs from s2 I know is the cruise one. It's so hilarious and over the top. S1....The episodes with the crazy stalker girl who won't leave Shane alone. The sad thing is that there are people out there like that.
N/A 5: I think if I had to pick one believe it or not it is PILOT because this set up the whole story, the characters and the viewers immediately experience the passion, love, confusion, that exists amongst the characters, and the difficulties that their sexuality can cause... eg Dana has to pretend shes straight, Tina and Bette have trouble getting pregnant and finding a donor. I have only seen season 1 though.
Are there any things that are not so great about the show?
Krizten: Occasionally the dialogue does leave something to be desired, they're not so big with the witty back & forth as most shows, & some of the clothes (mostly I'm talking about Jenny & Alice here), I just, don't even know how to describe them, basically, they walk on screen, & my first thought is, "What the hell is she wearing!?"
Shane_be_mine: It does get a bit disjointed at times, there is no continuity of story lines, also some really great characters dissappear e.g. Marina and Ivan, and Jenny's Carnival sequences are excruiatingly painful and pointless need I say more?
Athena: The fact that Mark is video taping the girls even if it is for an artistic view.
So_funny: Guest characters are badly written off or just seem to disappear. The Jenny writing scenes are quite annoying and unnecessary, Bette and Tina need to get back together.
Frida: It is a rollercoaster sometimes. Not everyone gets the space they need in an episode, and I don't understand why so much screentime goes to Jenny!
Laura: I've always conswdered the show for wha it is, just fiction. So I don't think there's any need to overanalyze things like Tv shows if not for technical aspects. And so far I think their doing a pretty damn good job.
Melanie: Jenny's stories.
Rich: Of course not!
Jay: That it's filmed in Vancouver but I never see Shane walking down the street. Lame.
Breezer: I don't enjoy the cussing so much.
Grimm: I don't like the way they write people off, they mess with continuity and are not being truthful to the characters. Some decisions made by wardrobe are sad beyond words. They should let ezgirl go, her music usage is beyond HORRIBLE! Many are the scenes completely destroyed by her 'talents'! Fuck off, I say!
Jay 2: The lack of BACKBONE that some of the girls show, it's becasue I'm a get up n go, take no shit person that the way they endure.........it's a test of patience on my par and the charcters part.
Dana 4-ever: Humor should be spread out over the season, like it was in season 1. Now everything is cluttered together with focus on specific characters, like Dana and Alice. That creates the funny sidekicks with no plot, characters who must be funny all the time, the single focus belittles them.
Adamant_Eve: During S1 I despised the Jenny scenes, total bore. I'm liking them now during S2. I don't care much for Mark or his whole storyline during S2.
Serendipidy: I know people say these women do not represent lesbians truthfully. But there is no way that one show could be representative of every lesbian out there. I think for the group of women they are trying to show, they do a splendid job. Shane is far from lipstick lesbian, despite having a fun sense of style in season 2. I think they do a wonderful job and we should not be complaning, moreso thanking them for putting us on on tv at all.
J: Yes, of course, like everything else in life. Nothing is perfect. Sometimes they just leave a few loose ends, or something that looked very complicated just magically works itself out. And the most important thing: it just has too few episodes per season!! Lol
Carrie: I'm sure there are, but I just take it as it is. What I've seen of season two has been kinda disappointing.
N/A: It doesn't air in my country, though I kind of prefer it this way, it's like my special unique hobbie...I know this is just an illusion.
MistressKitty: Even while they break down stereotypes, the show creates and perpetuates them as well. Also, I think there are so many other types of lesbian women who are not represented in the show. For example, the fact that I am a virgin and have never had a real relationship. but then again, there is only so much time to fill.
Kincora: Did everyone's life have to turn to shit at the end of last season? Hopefully at least two couples will be doing well at the end of this season. But I doubt it.
Kat: Well Jenny's writing for starters. Most of the bad things about the show though I still love because a) they give the hilarious recappers something to whinge about, b) they make the wonderful Dalice sex scenes that much more worth waiting for, and c) life's like that. We need crappy things to identify with too, you know!
Mailis: Nothing comes to mind…
Brea: I don't think so. Not any really big ones.
Alice is my Homegirl: The uneven first season. The fact that TLW sometimes seems to be more of a show for heterosexual viewers rather than bi- and homosexual viewers. The Network often seem to make the 'wrong' target group its top priority. Which is why we have to suffer through loads of hetero-humping, Mark, Gomey the sleazeball -may he be struck by lightning and burnt to a crisp (and every other scrap of heteronormative bullshit I don't care for at all, thank you very much).
Silver_roxy: Two words....Snoop Dogg...
N/A 2: Not really.
Horace: Jenny and Bette both are too self involved and take themselves way too seriously.
Chloe S: Some subplots are hard to believe: 1) Season 1 finale when Alice declared her love for Dana. Where did that come from?? 2) Season 2 - Shane and Jenny became rootmates. Have they run out of things to write? 3) Why would a guy like Mark be written into the storyline? - Season 2 opening title sequence by BETTY
Kaela: No, it's WICKED.
Joann: Too much heterosexual sex. Too much Jenny.
N/A 3: Bette and Tina need to speed along the process of getting back together.
Joey: There are storylines that are not pursued and/or followed through, which is clearly demonstrated in the s2 finale. I do like Shane screwing with gender in the way she dresses herself, but there could also be more genderplay on the show overall. And European characters are written as arrogant assholes which makes it hard for me to relate to the show completely. On a good day they work as marginalized plot devices. Could we have a nice, hot (and real) Swedish chick aboard? ;D
Maria: Straight males being sleazy lezzie-voyeurs and the stereotyping of lesbian characters. The show was said to break all old stereotypes but in its stead seems to be creating new ones.
Chelsea: Hell yes... the drama is always high! But it's going to be or people would lose interest in the show. ;-)
buggs666: Just Jenny and her weirdness.
N/A 4: Jenny!!!! Throw her out!!!!!
Digitalgoddess: I can't really complain about much. The only thing I hate is the music.
N/A 5: Nope it is brilliant.
What kind of storylines do you like the most/least? Do you have a favorite writer?
Krizten: Dana & Alice, definately, also the Shane, Carmen, Jenny triangle is getting pretty interesting, though it's gonna suck for Jenny when she see's what Carmen says about her tonight. I wasn't too fond of the Ivan & Kit storyline, mostly cause it seemed like it was promoting the myth that we go around trying to "turn" straight women, & the whole Helena even exsisting I'm really not liking.
Shane_be_mine: Don't know about a favorite writer, but storylines where there are great lines, lots of friendly banter between all the cast, less intense stuff, kind of like the pilot episode in season 1.
Athena: -
So_funny: Bette/Tina, anything Shane related and the friend/lover aspect of Dana/Alice.
Frida: I don't like to see the girls suffer, so I'll go with the nice storylines. Especially Bette- and Tina related stuff. Great chemistry between those two.
Laura: Bette and Tina storylines it's probably the most moving and insightful, but at the same time I love how Jenny's character has evolved from season 1. Dana and Alice love story is basically addictive for me and I don't want to be partial about it. The only off key note it's the Shane/Carmen mess; I found a little too simplicistic, with the confession scene, the way we get to know how Shane is a commitement-emotional phobe.
Melanie: The storylines I like the most are Dana's and Alice's. The storylines I like the least are Jenny's.
Rich: I love the storylines that involve art, and Bette giving her philosophy of art. I like the storylines that bring up politics.
Jay: You mean there WERE storylines in season 1? Here I thought it was just the writers having seizures.
Breezer: I don't have a favorite writer, but I do like the storylines that end well. I'm a sucker for "happily ever after."
Grimm: I love relationships! Like the Ivan/Kit relationship, it's intriguing because it's a heterosexually defined relationship but yet not… He sees himself as a man, but she sees him as two complicated entities, a man but not, etc. It's always exciting to see what they'll do, I like their storyline very much. Well yeah, I like things complicated.
Jay 2: I can't say, cuz I'm not picky although there are sum ideas that I would like to project into the writer's heads though...
Dana 4-ever: Any storyline that has anything to do with Dana! Hey, have a look at my nick, will ya??? *LOL*
Adamant_Eve: -
Serendipidy: I like any story line involving Shane. I just feel like they are the most real. Her internal conflicts sometimes ring a little truer than some of the actual conflicts experienced by other characters (example dana being embarassed by her unexpected female ejaculation. I can appreciate the humour in it though, trust me.) I think the drama in season 1 as to Jenny's sexuality was a little overdrawn. I know it's realistic but for television drama purposes i found it a little tedious.
Episodes written by Ilene and Guin tend to impress me most.
J: I don't have a favorite writer. But I like the storylines that give a character chances to explore different sides of themselves, and lets us see that. Also, it's nice when you can get a little more background on the characters.
Carrie: -
N/A: The Bette & Tina storylines are the least appealing to me, probably because I don't identify with them as much. I like the Dana coming out story, Alice and her not having to decide on men or women...and Shane and Jenny together in the house...
MistressKitty: Things I really like: Jenny/Carmen/Shane. Things I HATE: Shane working for Camryn Manheim. Ivan being not how he seemed. Kit and Benjamin. Mixed feelings: Helena. She's funny. She's a bitch. She has a great ass. She's a nympho. She's a plot device. Blah blah blah.
Kincora: Loved the tug of war between Tim and Marina.
Kat: Definitely the infidelity/complex love triangle situations. Carmen/Shane/Jenny rocks my foot-underwear. I liked the Tina/Bette/Candace and the Alice/Dana/Tonya too. I'm afraid I don't research which writers are responsible for what.
Mailis: -
Brea: No I think the writers mess really well.
Alice is my Homegirl: All kinds of storylines, but maybe the comedy stands out more? Cuz all the ladies have good timing when they deliver their lines, the scenes come off really well. It's not that the drama sucks, cuz it doesn't, but when a shitload of misery piles up one another it's no fun anymore. It's too much, you almost can't take it anymore. I know misery and heartbreak are necessary ingredients on the road to an happy ending, but enough with the unbelievably miserable plots, ok? We need at least ONE happy person to help the others gravitate towards level ground.
Silver_roxy: I like the variety, although I do wish Alice's bisexuality would show through a bit more.
N/A 2: I have never been all that interested in the Bette and Tina drama... maybe b/c Tina makes me mad. I like storylines with lots o' drama.
Horace: I loved Shane stories in season 1 (before Jenny intruded into her storyline) Anything with Dana and Alice.
Chloe S: Most Like: 1) Conflicts between Helena, Bette and Tina. 2) Shane's love life (I wish they could explore this more). 3) Group fun meet up e.g. the trip to the "tennis convention", on the yacht, group helping Dana to hook up with Lara, etc. 4) Anything with Marina. Least Like: 1) Jenny's writing "career" progress 2) Same plot going back-and-forth too many times continuously and becomes draggy. Writer: Guinevere Turner.
Kaela: Like i said it's all good, I don't have a favorite.
Joann: I like the Alice/Dana storyline the best because it's the funniest, and most like life. I'm very tired of the confused Jenny storyline, and the whining Tina storyline too.
N/A 3: I like Carmen and Jenny. I dislike Mark's entire storyline.
Joey: Gimme darkness! I'm a huge fan of dramatic storylines drenched in darkness and angst. Why I've enjoyed the comedy in TLW more is a mystery… I usually go for the drama, can't help myself! So if the story dpt could please shape up there, I'd cherish them all. Of the regular writers, I must say Guin Turner is a favorite. But there are many talented writers on the staff.
Maria: I like when the story is very real, like it was everyday life for any of us. I don't have a favorite writer, they are so different from each other in style.
Chelsea: GUINEVERE TURNER! I love Guin... She's amazing... Let's just say her stuff is my favorite, storyline-wise.
buggs666: I like them all. No favorite writer I think they all rock.
N/A 4: liked the one between Dana and the Soup Chef, all the ones with Shane offcourse and the Kit and Ivan storyline.
Digitalgoddess: -
N/A 5: I like the Jenny and Marina storyline for the reasons I have already mentioned but also the Bette and Tina storyline is moving because they clearly love each other deeply and they have a connection that exists beyond a sexual level.
